R. Andrew Smith
Attorney R. Andrew Smith concentrates his practice in construction litigation, professional liability, insurance coverage, and insurance defense. He is part of a team that assists on complex and catastrophic injury cases at the firm. He also works with the firm’s litigation management consulting. In addition, Mr. Smith supervises the team of lawyers and staff that handle matters with alternative fee structures.
Mr. Smith’s practice specifically involves advocacy on behalf of business owners, including general contractors, sub-contractors, residential and commercial property owners, home owners, homeowner associations, retail business owners, and transportation companies. Mr. Smith has assisted businesses in various industries, including construction, commercial transportation, manufacturing, retail services and retail sales, and the death industry. Mr. Smith excels in handling litigation with complex factual and legal issues, including appellate litigation. He is well versed in areas of practice including: premises liability (slip/trip and fall), motor vehicle collisions, construction defect, construction injury, general negligence, the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, employer liability, workers compensation, breach of contract, breach of warranty, and commercial litigation.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Smith is an avid legal technologist that seeks to employ new technology in law practice. He has taught seminars on topics involving the use of technology in law practice, law practice management, and legal ethics for a number of professional associations, including the Chicago Bar Association, American Bar Association, the Minnesota County Attorney’s Association, and the Minnesota Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
Mr. Smith started his practice in Illinois in 2006 after graduating from the Valparaiso University School of Law. He worked in a variety of areas, including commercial litigation, creditor/debtor lawsuits, housing disputes on behalf of landlords and tenants, insurance defense, workers compensation, and personal injury. Mr. Smith began practicing as a traffic prosecutor for the City of Chicago, Department of Law, where he prosecuted petty crime matters working in a very fast paced environment. He has hundreds of trials to his credit, and is a skilled litigator. He subsequently started a solo practice assisting individuals and businesses in a variety of civil litigation matters, worked as a supervising staff attorney for the Chicago Legal Clinic, Inc., and practiced in Minnesota in the areas of civil litigation, personal injury, corporate law, commercial transactions, and commercial litigation.
